Louis XIV: Illegal Tender

By Collin Quick

According to history, Louis XIV was the King of France and one of the most idolized monarchs. The band that goes by the name, however, are just four guys that are full of themselves.

“Me, me, me, me is all I really wanna talk about,” shouts lead singer Jason Hill over clanging guitar riffs, hand claps and high toned bass notes.

The five song EP opens with a track named after the band, thus promoting the question, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?” However, in this case, the question may fall along the lines of “How narcissistic of a group must you be to actually name a song after your band’s moniker?”

The radio-friendly “Finding Out True Love is Blind” has the dance beat and catchy lyrics to put Louis XIV in the same boat as the Strokes, but lines such as “I want the stupid girl who gives me all those dirty looks” just scream for attention and something different.

Louis XIV’s vocals emulate those of the Clash, and musically evoke sounds of early Smiths and The Cure, especially on the piano-based song “Marc.”

The EP closes out on “Louis Reprise,” a track devoid of lyrics and revolves around a down-to-home country theme, a true departure from the rest of the album.
