Fashion show to honor black history
February 24, 2005
Present Perfect Modeling Organization is holding its 16th Annual Afrocentric Fashion Show tonight.
The organization is celebrating Black History Month by showcasing a history of African-American artists and entertainers during the fashion show.
The show, themed “Black Star Power,” is being held at 8 p.m. today in the Duke Ellington Ballroom. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The production will feature African apparel and accessories, both formal and casual.
“We’re basically paying tribute to black musicians, black actors and black artists,” said Tamika Wells, senior public health major and president of Present Perfect Modeling Organization.
“There will be 35 members who are going to participate,” Wells said. “Present Perfect sponsors the show, and VIBE is also helping by performing an African dance for us.”
The cost for entrance is $4 and $3 with a canned good. All proceeds go to the Hope Haven Shelter of DeKalb.
“Present Perfect started out around 20 years ago with the idea of doing something positive for Black [History] Month,” said Van Amos, program coordinator for the Center for Black Studies. “And the original troop came up with the idea of having an annual fashion show to commemorate Black History Month.”
In addition to clothes being modeled, there will be singing and dancing presentations. Present Perfect has also coordinated two raffles featuring multiple prizes.
“We’re going to be giving away Lil’ Flip concert tickets and Mary Kay makeup products, and a few other things,” Wells said.
