Gymnastics seniors look for win on special day
February 25, 2005
Sunday’s gymnastics meet will be a bittersweet one for the NIU seniors.
For the graduating gymnasts it will be senior night and their final regular season meet at NIU.
“Our feelings are mixed,” NIU senior Keri Saint said. “It will be kind of sad because it is our last meet and all our friends and family will be their for support, but we have to keep going and get ready for the rest of the season and the championships.”
NIU (4-5 Overall, 1-2 MAC) will host Kent State (6-2, 3-1) for a 2 p.m. match at Victory Court in the Convocation Center.
“Kent State is a great team and has had a very good history here at NIU,” Saint said. “Everyone should rise up for senior day, it’s the perfect time to put up great scores.”
The Huskies will be led by senior Kristina Campos, who won the all-around title at Illinois State last week.
KSU features the MAC gymnast of the week for the last two weeks in Carrie Mayle. As a team, the Golden Flashes haven’t had a team total under a 194.300 since Jan. 21.
“Kent is good,” NIU coach Mark Sontag said. “We need to hit all 24 routines. We haven’t done that all season. We’re hitting in practice and we just can’t seem to transfer that to the meet.”
Saint said the Huskies have been practicing in front of judges to help them compete under pressure better.
“If I had to say one thing that’s been hurting us is pressure,” Saint said. “We’re doing routines in front of judges in practice to help. We’re trying to really work out the quirks.”
