Spring Job Fair to be held tomorrow at Convo Center
February 7, 2005
NIU’s Career Planning and Placement Center is sponsoring the annual Spring Job Fair to be held tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
“Every year, we invite all sorts of companies to our job fairs,” said Ron Short, executive director of career services. “Students should come for the opportunity to expose themselves to a company.”
One hundred forty-four companies currently are registered for attendance at tomorrow’s fair.
“It’s important to get online and research the companies you want to visit at the fair,” said Karen Castelein, a placement counselor for the CPPC. “It is very important to sound intelligent when speaking with these company representatives.”
“I want go on Tuesday. This past week I was getting my resume prepared,” said senior general studies major Katie Kingsley. “I understand that jobs are hard to come by, even for college graduates, so I think this is pretty important to go to. Just because I’m a college graduate doesn’t mean I’m going to find a job right away.”
The fall 2004 job fair held 948 student attendees, including not only undergraduates but also many graduate students and alumni.
“We hope that even more students attend this year’s fair,” Short said. “We hope for bigger numbers every year. The majority of students that went to last semester’s fair were computer science majors. We’ve invited all sorts of companies to this semester’s fair, so we’re hoping to attract a more diverse crowd of students.”
“This is just one of the strategies for a student to get into their field after graduation,” Castelein said. “It’s best to go down all possible avenues in order for students to get the jobs they’re looking for.”
