Evans Scholars to lend helping hand in Classic
August 26, 1993
This Sunday the Evans Scholars will be participating for the second consecutive year in the annual Fall Classic held at the Kishwaukee Country Club. Proceeds made from this event will be donated to the United Way.
The Fall Classic is Kishwaukee Country Club’s biggest tournament of the year. Members of the Evans house participate in the tournament by scoring and caddying for the members. The salary received from this event is then donated to the United Way.
The United Way is an umbrella organization in charge of distribution of funds to the 21 agencies in the DeKalb and Sycamore Areas.
Included among these agencies are the Hope Haven, a shelter for the homeless, the Voluntary Action Center, an organization providing transportation for the handicapped and elderly and “Meals on Wheels”, etc.
The Evans House first approached the Kishwaukee Country Club and developed a relationship which enables the house to help the community.
According to Quentin Burrows, executive vice president of the Evans Scholars, “By doing this, we have established a reciprocal relationship which benefits us and the United Way.”
Dave Paeglow, Head Golf Professional at Kishwaukee Country Club, said the Evans Scholars raised over five hundred dollars last year for the United Way.
“Members of the Kishwaukee Country Club want to help out by letting the scholars be scorers again,” Paeglow said. “We are proud to help the Evans Scholars’ Philanthropy Day and we are happy to help the community through the United Way.”
The NIU Evans Scholars is a branch of the Evans Scholars Foundation whose goal is to send caddies to college. Eligibility is based on academic achievement, personal merit and financial need.
Burrows said, “There are a total of forty seven members, five of which are female. The average caddie experience for members is from two to three years and the current house GPA is approximately 3.0.”
The event is to take place between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. August 29 at the Kishwaukee Country Club at 1901 Sycamore Road.
