Student Center undergoing renovation

The Holmes Student Center’s 11th floor is undergoing $200,000 in repairs and cosmetic improvements.

The repairs were needed because air conditioning units leaked water and caused ceiling damage in the hotel rooms, said Mitch Kielb, acting director of the HSC.

The leaks have been a recurring problem for the last 10 years. Kielb said he expects the 11th floor to be complete in two to three weeks.

Although the HSC has also remodeled the 12th floor, Kielb said there are no plans to renovate hotel floors below the 11th floor.

Funded by student-paid bond fees, the budget for each floor is about $200,000, Kielb said. The 12th floor renovations also cost $200,000.

In addition to ceiling repairs, the HSC is also modernizing its hotel rooms.

“As long as we’re going to repair that [ceiling],” Kielb said, “we might as well update the room a little bit.”

Cosmetic repairs include new sinks, rugs and furniture in the guest rooms. Workers have replaced outdated bathroom tiles and substituted the hallway’s fluorescent fixtures with softer lighting.

The whole process makes the hotel seem more like a hotel and less like a dorm room, Kielb said.

Hotel guests can request a renovated room, but only guests aware of the renovations are currently requesting them, said Merlynette Griffin, a HSC front desk clerk.

The hotel is not the only portion of the HSC to undergo changes.

The HSC also is replacing fans in the Clara Sperling Sky Room, a meeting venue for organizations such as the Student Association.

Renovations have forced the SA to meet in the Capitol Room for several weeks. The room should reopen Feb. 16, Kielb said.

Both the Carl Sandburg Auditorium and the Duke Ellington Ballroom have had roof damage in the past few years.

Workers had to remove a quarter-inch of paint to repair the ballroom’s leaky roof several years ago, Kielb said.

A portion of the Carl Sandburg Auditorium’s roof fell down late last year. While repairing it, workers also discovered asbestos in the auditorium’s ceiling.

The repairs to the Carl Sandburg Auditorium started Dec.1 and will continue through Feb. 28. The repairs are not the final planned version, but instead a temporary fix.

More extensive repairs will be addressed as part of the building’s master plan, Kielb said. The master plan will take a look at the entire building and all prior renovation projects.

The remodeling is the first time the HSC has been updated in its 40-year history.
