The ultimate fantasy baseball team

Law student Nate Himert is just one of many major league baseball fans counting down the 14 days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training.

Himert, a Chicago White Sox fan, said he has certain criteria for a player to crack his top ten all-time favorites list.

“You have to be a decent player and a decent guy,” he said. “I don’t care about flash and showing off. I care about production. Also, you can’t be a career Yankee.”

10. Retired Houston Astros starting pitcher Nolan Ryan – “I was a pitcher in high school and my glove said Nolan Ryan. He’s my boy. He’s also got an attractive wife … at least for an older woman. There was an advil commercial with her and him six or seven years ago. It should have been a Viagra ad.”

9. Late Chicago White Sox outfielder “Shoeless” Joe Jackson – “‘Field of Dreams’ was an awesome movie and even though he helped throw a World Series, no one could touch those teams he was on.”

8. Chicago Cubs shortstop Nomar Garciaparra – “I had a Boston roommate when I lived in DC and listening to him say Nomar was one of the funniest things I have ever heard. And he’s a pretty good baseball player too.”

7. Oakland Athletics closer Dennis Eckersley – “When the ninth inning came around, no one could touch him.”

6. Atlanta Braves closer John Smoltz – “He made a great transition from starter to closer and now he’s going back. He’s been phenomenal his whole career.”

5. Boston Red Sox catcher Carlton Fisk – “It’s all about that homerun where he waved the ball fair in Boston. That is one of the most remarkable things caught on video ever.”

4. Free agent outfielder Magglio Ordonez – “His numbers over the past four years. Even though he turned on us, he was a great hitter.”

3. Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Mark Prior – “Even though he is a Cub, he’s helped my fantasy team a lot these past years. I’ve never seen a smoother motion. I saw his first start in-person.”

2. New York Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran – “He’s the next A-Rod. He does everything … steals bases … hits for power and plays defense.”

1. Retired Chicago White Sox third baseman Robin Ventura – “I’m a big White Sox fan and when I was in high school, I also played third base. He’s always stuck with me. I even followed him to the damn Yankees.”
