Unwritten Law: Here’s to the Mourning
February 10, 2005
Unwritten Law, we need to have a talk about punk rock.
Sit down. Would you like something to drink? No? OK.
Unwritten Law, look and listen. Take notes if you feel necessary. Let’s start from the beginning.
Look back to the ’70s and punk music coming out of England.
Look at Joe Strummer and the Clash. Listen to “London Calling.” Please, just listen to it.
Look at Sid Vicious and the Sex Pistols. Listen to “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols.” Please, just listen.
Now look at New York punk rock.
Look at The Ramones. Look at Joey, Dee Dee, Tommy and Johnny. Listen to “Ramones.” Listen. Clean the wax out of your ears.
Look at Fugazi and at Ian MacKaye and his “do-it-yourself” attitude.
Look at the new age of punk rock music. Look at Long Island, New York. Listen to “Deja Entendu” by Brand New and “Tell All Your Friends” by Taking Back Sunday.
Listen to Thursday and Geoff Rickly sing his heart out. Listen to Alkaline Trio and Matt Skiba get pissed off about the simplest things.
Unwritten Law, look and listen.
While you’re at it, lose Linda Perry as a producer.
