Vandiver wrestles response
February 3, 2005
Last year, Chad Vandiver redshirted his first year as five other wrestlers competed for the 125-pound starting lineup spot.
This season, the NIU freshman has started every dual meet and has compiled an 18-9 record, including a defeat of Central Michigan’s nationally ranked Luke Smith.
Vandiver recently made time to answer some questions on the team’s potential, tight spandex and uncleanly teammates.
Northern Star: Did you think you would be a starter right away, especially with such a deep weight class?
Chad Vandiver: I didn’t know what would happen. I’ve just been working hard. If you would have said I’d be a starter coming right off my redshirt season, I probably would have been skeptical.
NS: Are the ladies impressed when you say you’re a college athlete, especially a starter?
CV: No, not really. Maybe if I were on the football team or something it would work.
NS: How much of a pain is it to keep your weight down?
CV: It’s tough. I had to lose some weight before the season began. But it’s part of the sport, and it helps you get in shape, too.
NS: Do you have any nicknames from teammates?
CV: I don’t know – some people call me Diver. I can’t disclose the other nickname they have for me.
NS: Any particular superstitions or rituals?
CV: Not really. I make sure to tie my shoes a certain way. Some guys do, though, with how they tape themselves up and whatnot.
NS: Are the spandex suits uncomfortable? They look kind of tight.
CV: Actually, it’s real comfortable. It’s something you get used to. It’s kind of like a second skin.
NS: If you could play any other sport, what would it be?
CV: Probably football – if I were five inches taller.
NS: Who would you say is the strongest on the team, pound for pound?
CV: Derek Hunsinger. He’s the world’s strongest man. [Laughs.]
NS: Is there a story behind that?
CV: Coach [Grant] gave him that name and it’s stuck. It’s just the things he does in practice and meets that no one else can do.
NS: Does he ever rough anyone up in practice?
CV: [Laughs.] Nah, he’s a pretty nice guy. Just when he goes out during a match.
