The Impossible Shapes: Horu

By Lindsey Rosati

Impossible seems like the perfect name for the Indianapolis band “The Impossible Shapes.”

Its fifth album, “Horus,” proves the attempt comes up a bit too short. It strays too far into what seems to be the band’s own, almost childish reality.

Hello, is anyone there?

“The Impossible Shapes” definitely has its own inventive sound, but where do you draw the line in experimenting? Maybe when you create your own spooky fantasy world.

A variety of quirky beats and lyrics mixed with singer Chris Barth’s soft, high-pitched voice bring a very unusual release.

Some of the tracks on the album will make you wonder where in the world the band came up the ideas. Tracks such as “Demon Love” and “The Beast” are psychedelic imagination gone too far.

Just take the lyrics of “Demon Child” for example: “You look after me like a demon child should/ Do what you want with me/ I’ll be waiting in the words.”

Why not write a song about a liger? I’m sure Napoleon Dynamite would be very grateful.

Gritty and a bit dreamy at times, “Horus” would be a great soundtrack for a sci-fi video game.
