Super Bowl XXXIX Is your bar ready for some football?
February 3, 2005
All the Super Bowl hype – costly commercials and halftime controversy included – doesn’t mean a thing if a viewer can’t watch the show in a comfortable venue.
Those not wanting to spend their Sunday night in the confines of their Lazy Boys and sofas can opt for the bar stools of the local watering hole.
The big game is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. local time and will pit the AFC New England Patriots vs. the NFC Philadelphia Eagles.
Some local bars have more unusual options for the football (or commercial) fans on Super Bowl weekend.
Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, will be showing the 1985 Super Bowl, said Nick Franklin, a bartender at Fatty’s. The bar is also home to a giant picture of Mike Ditka, former Bears coach during the ‘85 Super Bowl, anchored to the back of the building.
During the game, the pub will be raffling off Cubs and Bulls tickets, signed Bears memorabilia and a “Best Seat in the House” for watching the game at the bar.
In Sycamore, PJ’s Courthouse Tavern and Grille will host its eighth annual Mardi Gras party the same weekend as the Super Bowl. The Mardi Gras party features Cajun-New Orleans cooking, a $300 raffle giveaway and a live local band.
“With Fat Tuesday being early and the Super Bowl being late . . . It’s odd it being the same weekend,” said Paul Schwartz, co-owner and the “P” in PJ’s.
On Sunday, PJ’s will host a dart tournament with a $200 cash prize, giveaways, raffles and an Italian-food buffet free for customers.
O’Leary’s Irish Pub & Grill, 260 E. Lincoln Highway, will hold two Super Bowl bingo games with $20 cash prizes with no purchase necessary to play, said owner Mel Witmer.
Similar to PJ’s, O’Leary’s will have a free buffet of appetizers during the halftime show.
But one local bar manager is a little concerned about the halftime activities, considering last year’s halftime Janet Jackson nipple slip.
“I don’t have any desire to see old nipples,” said Derek Nayden, a manager at Molly’s Kitchen, 1022 W. Lincoln Highway, referring to this year’s act, Paul McCartney. “Especially cause he’s a dude, even though he’s a Beatle.”
Molly’s will be holding a trivia contest, where first prize is $200, second prize is a VIP party at Molly’s and third prize is a date with Doug Smith, another manager at Molly’s or a grab from the “Mystery Box.”
Nayden wouldn’t reveal what was in the mystery box, but said only that “it’ll be worth it.”
Not every bar special was included from every bar in DeKalb and Sycamore. Some bars won’t be open on Sunday, while other refused to talk about their plans.
