Two men’s soccer players arrested

Bernhard Hagevik and Paul Gabel of the NIU men’s soccer team were charged with delivery of alcohol to a minor and selling liquor without a license at 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

NIU coach Steve Simmons said he has spoken to the players and the team is following the appropriate chain of command to handle the situation.

“We’re handling the situation internally,” Simmons said. “It’s something that is unacceptable and completely opposite of what we’re about as a program.”

Hagevik, a graduating senior, started in 11 of 19 games last season and finished with four goals and two assists for the Huskies. The forward scored 15 goals and dropped five assists over his four-year career.

“Of course there’s going to be consequences,” Hagevik said. “We made a mistake, and we’re willing to do what we can to make it right.

However, Gabel is supposed to return for the Huskies next fall. Born in Dunoon, Scotland, Gabel transferred from North Oklahoma College last summer. The junior midfielder was brought in to strengthen the Huskies defense, which allowed 19 goals last fall.

“Paul’s situation is a little different,” Simmons said. “Hopefully everyone will learn from this.”
