This Toothpick isn’t for your teeth
February 3, 2005
Singer/songwriter Toothpick will play Saturday at 9 p.m. at Fatty’s Pub and Grille, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway.
Toothpick, aka Doug Ray, opened for O.A.R at the Convocation Center last February.
Ray wrote the song “Supersize Me” featured in the 2005 Academy Award-nominated documentary by Morgan Spurlock, “Supersize Me.”
“(DeKalb) was great,” said Toothpick’s manager Cari Gelber. “We had a great response last year when he came.”
Ray visited DeKalb several times since his O.A.R. opening slot.
“I know he played an acoustic performance at the radio station,” Gelber said, “and he’s played at some local clubs.”
Ray’s management called Fatty’s booking agent Nick Franklin to make a stop at the pub because of his last visit in DeKalb.
“He was interested in playing after coming here before,” Franklin said.
Franklin realized the irony of an artist named Toothpick, with a title song track in a documentary about obesity in America and fast food, who is playing at a bar called Fatty’s.
“We were joking around about that the other day,” Franklin said.
Franklin is a fan of the artist and has seen bits and pieces of the “Supersize Me” documentary.
“I’ve heard some of his songs, and I really like the title track, ‘Supersize Me,’” Franklin said.
Ray recently released his debut solo album, “Time Travelin’ Couch,” which features songs about being young and the cultural obsession with using pills. Ray cites a range of musical influences from A Tribe Called Quest to Soul Coughing to Cat Stevens. He was listed as No. 3 on the “Hot List” in an issue of Rolling Stone Magazine last year.
Toothpick’s new album, “Time Travelin’ Couch,” will be available for sale at the show.
