Chicago bands play Dekalb
January 27, 2005
DeKalb will host three concerts this weekend featuring Chicagoland natives.
In addition to Bobby Conn, who will play The Rodeo, 249 Palmer Court, on Saturday evening, two other shows have garnered the attention of the concert-going public.
Brian Moss, of indie-rock outfit The Ghost, is slated to play The Rodeo tonight with Felix Culpa and Blame Twilight. Moss will perform as a solo artist under the name Hanalei – his acoustic, singer/songwriter project.
Hanalei is touring in support of “We Are All Natural Disasters,” his Thick Records debut. The mini-tour, which comes on the heels of longer and more extensive trips across the country and overseas, will culminate in March at the annual South By Southwest Music Festival.
Felix Culpa, whose album “Commitment” was hailed by Punk News as the 13th-best album of 2004, originally hails from Rockford and will accompany Hanalei tonight. The band’s sound has drawn comparisons to acts as varied as At The Drive-In and Bjork.
Rock ‘n’ roll trio Veryle Turnstyle will play a free show at 10 p.m. Friday at Otto’s Underground, 118 E. Lincoln Highway.
The group has been together for five years. Consisting of Luke Abernethy (vocals and guitar), Hans Nyman (drums) and Adam Abernethy (bass), the band combines influences of such acts as Jimi Hendrix, Sublime, James Brown and Van Halen.
Veryle Turnstyle will play several dates across the Midwest reaching between Nashville, Tenn., and St. Joesph’s, Mich., as well as a Feb. 11 show in Bloomington. Their debut album will be released in May.
