NIU tries to turn table on Ball State

By Steve Brown

Western Michigan saw its 25-game men’s basketball home winning streak disappear Saturday when Ball State topped the Broncos 66-65.

Now, NIU coach Rob Judson wants his team to play the spoiler against BSU, which has won all seven of its home games this season.

“[A win Saturday] would be big, obviously,” said Judson. “We’re poised to make that happen.”

A win for NIU at Muncie, Ind. would not only break Ball State’s perfect home record, but it would give the Huskies their first MAC road win. Not an easy task at Worthen Arena, which averages a MAC best 5,127 fans a game.

The Huskies are 0-5 in conference road games, but four of those losses have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

“If you look at our road games, they’ve all been decided by a couple of possessions,” Judson said. “I think other teams still look at our team as being very dangerous.”

NIU’s most recent 86-80 loss to Buffalo came even though NIU outshot the Bulls 52.9 to 51.7 percent.

Judson blamed the loss on points off turnovers, something he is pushing to eliminate.

Ball State’s offense is led by Peyton Stovall, Terrance Chapman and Dennis Trammell, all of whom are averaging 15 points or more in MAC games.

Champman, a graduate of Joliet Township, and Trammell both hail from Illinois. Trammell, who played at Chicago Westinghouse, is the reigning MAC West player of the week.
