Cable Guy brings blue-collar laughs to Convo
January 24, 2005
According to fans leaving the Convocation Center Friday night, Larry the Cable Guy “got it done.”
Bringing his Southern drawl, guitar and flannel shirt to DeKalb, Larry entertained the nearly sold-out crowd in what he considered just a simple night of fun.
“If you get offended, then leave,” Larry informed the crowd. “I’m here to have fun.”
Those who braved Friday night’s snowstorm watched as the comedian, made famous by the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, took time to explain his flatulence problem, poked fun at a few of his friends back home and even sang a few Christmas carols.
C.J. Wade, a senior business management major, said he was surprised at the event’s turn-out.
“For having so much snow on Friday night, the crowd was really large and energetic,” Wade said.
Many fans familiar with the Blue Collar star from Comedy Central and DVDs became bigger fans for seeing him in person.
“Seeing him live was the best experience ever,” said Tim Newbeck, a freshman engineering major. “The way he is live is much better because on TV he seems watered-down.”
The crowd clutched their guts as he poked fun at his own protruding waistline and they howled when he read fan letters from kids.
Even when Larry would take a break for a drink of water, fans screamed out how much they loved him and he always had a comment on how much he loved them back.
“He was very gracious to the crowd,” Newbeck said. “If someone yelled something, he would respond to it right away.”
Larry’s set did not end when he left the stage. Fans in Ford hats and “Larry the Cable Guy” t-shirts crowded around the stage where Larry stayed and chatted with fans.
He even took the time to tell a few jokes to a look-alike so that he could do his own routine.
“I always try to take time for my fans,” Larry said. “That’s what it’s all about; having fun with them.”
Alexis Galindo, a freshman business management major, attended the show as a birthday present from a friend.
“I thought it was really cool that at the end of the show he stayed to meet people,” she said.
All sorts of people from different backgrounds are fans of Larry.
“You didn’t have to be a redneck to enjoy his show,” said Newbeck. “We should get the rest of the members of his group [the Blue Collar Comedy Tour] to come here next year.”
