Various Artists: The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou Soundtrack
January 20, 2005
Wes Anderson has consistently provided some of the most memorable soundtracks in recent years to accompany his quirky films such as “Rushmore” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.”
The strength of these soundtracks relied on Anderson’s ability to utilize old classics and meld them with the trademark sounds of Mark Mothersbaugh.
“The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” soundtrack follows suit but to a lesser extent and a lesser degree of success. Mothersbaugh’s band, Devo, and Iggy and the Stooges are wisely chosen, and composer Sven Libaek provides enjoyable originals.
The focal point here, however, is the presence of David Bowie. He has two recordings and five acoustic renditions of his songs performed in Portuguese by film co-star Seu Jorge.
Jorge’s renditions, however, are either wonderful (“Starman”) or lacking (“Rebel Rebel”). The problem is these minimal tracks spread out with the original instrumentals fail to keep us fully interested all the way through.
Anderson’s films take bold chances and so do his soundtracks. Unfortunately, the pearls here don’t shine as brightly.
