An 18-year-old woman and her infant daughter were killed Wednesday in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Route 30.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s police said Amanda L. Elkins, 18, last of Shabbona, was westbound on Route 30 one-fourth mile east of University Road when her 2002 Kia crossed over the center line into the oncoming lane of traffic and was struck by a semi tractor trailer.

Elkins was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:21 p.m. Her 10-month-old daughter, Jazmine Luciano, was transported to Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 626 Bethany Road, where she was pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m.

The driver of the semi, Robert Recker, 53, was taken to Rockford Memorial Hospital, 2400 Rockton Ave.

The accident is under investigation by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office and the DeKalb County Coronor’s Office.

“We don’t know exactly why she crossed the center line,” DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott said. “It’s possible there may have been some medical reason.”

Elkins may not have been feeling well, Scott said.

Scott said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
