Powder scare at Nestle dissolves
November 11, 2004
DeKalb firefighters and police investigated a suspicious white powder Wednesday at the DeKalb Nestle plant, 800 Nestle Court.
The building was evacuated until emergency crews identified the powder as a non-threatening granular plastic.
When firefighters and police arrived, it became apparent there was no real threat, Assistant Fire Chief Reuben Nelson said.
“Just to be on the safe side, we did some product testing and identification,” he said.
Fire officials conducted a pH protein test to confirm it was not biological, Nelson said. They also filled out a flow chart of yes and no questions.
Three hours later, they identified the substance as a plastic that may have leaked from a truck, Nelson said.
The plastic was cleaned up by vacuum, Nelson said.
