Neon, neon.

Like it or not, the ’80s are back! In popular music and fashion, the ’80s have brought back some good, bad and just plain ugly trends. It is impossible to avoid the wave of nostalgia sweeping today’s culture. However, the return of neon colors in clothing and accessories is a trend that literally brightens up any room.

For a while, neon clothing took a long nap in the back of closets while muted and dull clothing adorned most people. However, in the past two years neon has made a strong comeback, not only with the younger generations, but with almost everyone. Men and women of all ages can appreciate bright colors and loud clothing, but this look is especially appropriate for 18- to 24-year-olds. The look is not too young to make the wearer look immature or dated. It is perfect for adding flair and sparkle to an otherwise plain winter outfit.

Incorporating neon into one’s wardrobe can be done through a variety of ways. The bold wearer may choose to mix neon into everyday style with bright shirts or pants. However, the more timid wearer who is still getting acquainted with loud style can mix in small wardrobe pieces such as scarves, hats, shoes or purses with solid items, such as a black sweater or brown overcoat.

Neon colors can brighten up the wearer’s face and make him or her appear to be refreshed and ready for the day. There are many studies that have correlated colors with mood. Colors can affect people’s mindset. Dark colors, such as black and navy blue, draw attention away from the wearer whereas neon colors draw eyes to the wearer. Seeing a burst of bright color on the horizon or walking through the hallway can trigger a positive reaction without the viewer knowing it. With gloomy weather becoming the norm and skies turning progressively more gray, neon colors are great way to brighten up people’s moods.

Old Navy is an excellent place to ease into neon fashions. With cheap to moderate-price items, it always offers a large selection of bright choices.
