Cook adds flavor to the mix
November 17, 2004
Welcome to a flavorful edition of Playback. This week’s installment comes from Harriett Wilson, a Stevenson cafeteria cook helper who hails from nearby Sycamore. When she’s not working, Wilson likes to spend her time reading, gardening, traveling and relaxing. If Wilson were to make a mix this week, these are the 14 tracks she would serve up.
1. “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” – Rod Stewart. “I love his voice. I just think it’s so sexy. I like just about anything he sings.”
2. “Yesterday” – Beatles. “It’s a beautiful song that makes me think of my youth – like when I went to the gym and the smell of socks at the sock hop.”
3. “What a Wonderful World” – Rod Stewart. “I like the Louis Armstrong version of this song too, but I just can’t get over Rod Stewart’s version.”
4. “Blue Velvet” – Bobby Vinton. “I’m not telling you much about why I like this song for personal reasons. All I can say is that it brings back good memories.”
5. “Moon River” – Andy Williams. “This song was the last song played every night at the 10-to-12 Club that met at school. It was called that because you had to be in tenth to twelfth grade to attend the club. It was a great song to end the night.”
6. “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” – Elvis Presley. “This song brings me back to the ‘60s and it was played often at our school dances. I was dating someone else other than my husband then.”
7. “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” – Lee Pockriss. “I think of the summers I spent at the beach listening to this song and spending time with my friends there.”
8. “You Lift Me Up” – Josh Grobin. “He has a soothing, unreal voice. I could make a road trip to Rockford out of seeing him in concert when he comes here.”
9. “Silent Night” – Charlotte Church. “I play CDs the most when I have the time off [during Christmas] and when I’m alone in the house. She sings opera and has a strong voice; she was just 13 when she started. I believe she did a duet with Josh Grobin, too.”
10. “What’s a Guy Gotta Do?” – Joe Nichols. “I listen to a lot of my son’s tapes and he’s one of the artists on them. It’s a funny song because you always think of women having to chase after men and men just going up to a girl and having an easy time asking them out. Don’t you think men have it easier?”
11. “When A Man Loves A Woman” – Michael Bolton. “It’s about what a woman wants a man to feel about them – how you hope a man will look at you.”
12. “This Kiss” – Faith Hill. “This song gives me memories about me and my husband. The song is about that one kiss that makes you know that they’re that special someone.”
13. “Cat’s In The Cradle” – Harry Chapin. “The song is about living for the day you’re in. The song is about a father and son and the father in the song neglects spending time with his son and his son grows up and has no time for the father.”
14. “Live Like You Were Dying” – Tim McGraw. “The song is a realistic song that makes you stop and think. I enjoy listening to Tim McGraw, too.”
