Star brings home top awards from national media convention

By Northern Star Staff

This weekend marked the first time all three divisions of the Northern Star were honored simultaneously for excellence among college media outlets.

The Star’s online edition, www.northernstar.info, won its third consecutive Online Pacemaker Award Saturday at the annual Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers convention held in Nashville, Tenn. The Pacemaker Award – which is the collegiate equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize – is given out annually for excellence in online news presentation.

Sunday, the print edition received first place in its category for Wednesday’s coverage of the general election.

NS*Radio, the Star’s online radio station, won second place for its broadcast of the NIU football game against Bowling Green in September. The win was the first-ever entry and award in competition for the online radio station found at www.nsradio.com.

“The national recognition received over the weekend is a great accomplishment for all of the dedicated staff members at the Star,” editor in chief Mark Bieganski said. “In addition to balancing typical college-student responsibilities, our staff members spend countless hours each day to provide the NIU community with a solid perspective of news that affects them. These recognitions only begin to highlight the accomplishments the staff members achieve each day.”
