Men’s hoops completes preseason 2-0
November 15, 2004
After scoring 101 points in its first exhibition game, the NIU men’s basketball team continued its scoring onslaught Saturday, topping Laval University of Quebec 94-55 at the Convocation Center before a crowd of 1,894.
In their second and last exhibition of the season, the Huskies took a 17-3 lead in the first seven minutes and only built on their lead against the No. 6 team in Canadian college basketball.
“They didn’t shoot well early, but our defense had a lot to do with it.” NIU coach Rob Judson said. “They traveled, and it might have taken a little toll on them. I thought our defense was really sharp in the first half.”
After NIU’s second exhibition win this season, Laval traveled to Iowa City Sunday to face the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes fell behind early but came back to edge out Laval 85-77.
The Canadian team had amounted a 7-2 record before its losses to NIU and Iowa this weekend. Laval returned four starters from a team that went 17-1 last season.
The Huskies defense held Laval’s leading scorer and All-Canadian Charles Fortier to 11 points. Fortier averaged 21.4 points per game last season.
“He just does a lot of things well,” said NIU junior Todd Peterson, who guarded Fortier much of the second half. “He looks for open shots and creates space. He’s just an all-around good player.”
Sophomore Paige Paulsen led the Huskies with 19 points in the contest. James Hughes had 18 points, and Peterson, Zach Pancratz and Mike McKinney each had 12 points.
