HSC to host internship fair Wed.

NIU’s fall internship fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom.

The event will let students interview with recruiters from top companies.

Mireya Pourchot, program specialist for the cooperative education and internship program at NIU, said students should attend even if they have not planned an internship this semester.

“There is growing evidence in today’s tight job market that students may not always be offered a job right after college,” Pourchot said. “Students who participate in internships are more likely to be offered a full-time job at a higher salary than those who do not.”

Senior psychology major Andre Margossian said he will go to the fair.

“It’ll be a great opportunity to see what’s out there,” Margossian said. “It should really help define career goals.”

Freshmen are encouraged to attend the fair, although students can’t get NIU credit for an internship until they’ve completed 30 credit hours.

Pourchot said going still gives them good practice and experience.

Pourchot advised students to prepare well, since recruiters will evaluate potential employees. Pourchot also recommended that students research employers they want to contact and that they dress formally.

“Students should also bring copies of their resumes and be prepared to interview on the spot,” Pourchot said.

If students have a good grade point average, they should also bring copies of their transcript, she said.
