Job applicants dress to impress

By Joe Weyers

First impressions are critical for applicants, and one of the first things employers notice is clothing.

Ellen Anderson, assistant director of the Career Planning and Placement Center, has been an organizer of the job fair since it began in 1988. Anderson recommends a neat, conservative and professional look.

“Your attire represents you as a professional,” Anderson said. “This is the first impression an employer has of you, so you want to look good.”

Men should wear suits with jackets, and women should wear either suits with skirts or flat pants, Anderson said. If a man does not have a suit, Anderson suggests getting a sport coat with nice slacks but not Dockers and a polo shirt.

Women should avoid showing belly buttons, cleavage and too much jewelry, Anderson said.

Also, the CPPC suggests all applicants approach employers with confidence.

“You dress up and look your best,” Anderson said. “You behave professionally. It gives you a boost of confidence when you look in the mirror and look your best.”

Quick tips on appearance for the job fair

– Don’t wear too much perfume, cologne or aftershave.

– Be conservative with your piercings and try to find a transparent post for any tongue rings.

– It is better to be overdressed than underdressed.

– Bring a portfolio with your resume, paper and a pen, which should be kept in your left hand so your right hand is available to be shaken.

– Be confident.
