Q and Not U: Power
October 13, 2004
You never know what to expect with the new Q and Not U album.
Its first album, “No Kill No Beep Beep,” successfully utilized Fugazi-influenced guitar antics. Their second album, “Different Damage,” reflected the loss of its bass player by incorporating synthesizers while still maintaining an aggressive edge.
Now we have “Power.”
The lead track, “Wonderful People,” shows The Q’s new hand immediately. It is an infectious dance number with low-end synths that make your hips shake by the sheer vibration. The clean production is a nice change as well.
This is the new Q and Not U: cleaner production, bouncy dance beats and a little falsetto thrown in for flavor. However, the band’s definitive sound remains schizophrenic vocals and melodies, abstract lyrics and guitars to drool over.
Other standouts include “X-Polynation” and “Book of Flags.” With the excellent “Wet Work,” the band displays its ability to write a bona fide hit pop song (in a perfect world, of course).
Few bands can change so drastically from album to album while maintaining their identity. Once again, Q and Not U rips apart those traditions and spits them in your face.
