Decent date movie is light on its feet

By Lindsey Rosati

For a movie about ballroom dancing, its outcome is pretty decent.

Directed by Peter Chelsom (“Serendipity,” “Town & Country”), “Shall We Dance?” is a movie about Chicago accountant John Clark (Richard Gere), who is happily married but bored with his everyday routine, feeling that something is missing.

He finds the missing spark in his life in an unusual place: Miss Mitzi’s, a failing dance school.

It is there that he comes across the beautiful and broken-hearted Paulina (Jennifer Lopez), who is an assistant dance instructor to Miss Mitzi (Anita Gillette). Gere, at first seduced by Lopez’s beauty and dancing, comes to realize how much he loves the art form and how much happier he is while dancing.

The dance sequences are pretty humorous and amazing, particularly the one with Gere and Lopez midway through the film.

In his lessons, he is joined by two sidekicks – Vern (Omar Benson Miller) and Chic (Bobby Cannavale).

Vern is struggling with the fact that he is getting married soon and wants to not only lose some pounds, but impress his lady with his dancing moves. Chic says he is here because he believes that learning to dance will help him get women.

Gere decides to keep his lessons secret from his wife, Beverly (Susan Sarandon).

Meanwhile, Sarandon becomes suspicious of her husband’s behavior and hires a detective (Richard Jenkins) to follow him.

Lopez isn’t in the movie a whole lot, which is refreshing. Still, she manages to get a scene where she is barely dressed and dancing.

The movie gets some comic-relief from characters played by Stanley Tucci and Lisa Ann Walter.

Tucci plays Link Peterson, Gere’s co-worker, who is ashamed to let his love for dance become public knowledge. In doing so, he comes up with a hilarious and, at times, frightening disguise.

Walter plays Bobbie, a struggling dancer looking for a partner in an upcoming competition. Walter’s role is very comical and her outfits resemble something Fran Drescher would have worn on “The Nanny.”

There are some small cameos from Mya, who plays Vern’s fiancée and Nick Cannon, who plays Scotty, an assistant to the detective.

“Shall We Dance?” is actually a remake of a 1997 Japanese film. The original version reflected Japanese culture and symbolized a type of freedom for a hardworking businessman.

The movie is good, but at the same time the plot is lacking a bit, although there are plenty of characters that can keep you occupied and interested to make up for it.

Although “Shall We Dance?” isn’t laugh-out-loud funny all of the time, it has some nice moments.

It definitely has all the ingredients of a classic romantic comedy and is a great date movie. Hint hint, fellas.
