R. Kelly, Jay-Z hit Convo
September 23, 2004
Rapper Jay-Z and R&B artist R. Kelly have brought their worlds to DeKalb.
The duo, soon to embark on The Best Of Both Worlds tour, have set up shop at the Convocation Center for a series of run-throughs in preparation for two performances at the Allstate Arena Sept. 29 and 30.
Road crews and security guards began constructing the stage and lighting configurations Monday and are slated to keep the fully-functional set up until this Monday, said one crew member who asked to remain anonymous.
Kevin Selover, the arena’s marketing manager, said he did not think Jay-Z and R. Kelly would perform for NIU students Monday because the superstars have yet to perform a soundcheck.
Crew members said the possibility of a show is not out of the question.
“We won’t know until [the weekend] if there will be a concert here on Monday,” the anonymous crew member said Wednesday afternoon.
Selover expressed concern that media coverage would prompt a security upgrade at the Convo Center this weekend and dissuade the performers from taking the stage.
The Best Of Both Worlds, which kicks off with its Allstate Arena shows, runs through November and will end in Philadelphia after more than 40 scheduled dates.
