Campus provides services to resolve student conflicts

By Kevin Wick

Students have a variety of campus offices they can go to when they need help with classes or college life in general.

Student Mediation Services provides help for students who are having trouble with campus-related issues.

One thing that sets this service apart is that the disputes are resolved by law students who try to help both parties reach an acceptable outcome, said Heather Wier, a junior graduate assistant in the Judicial Office.

Located on the second floor of Grant Tower A, the office also provides students with a means to develop anger-management skills, problem-solving skills and effective communication. It handles issues involving roommate problems, vandalism, minor harassment, minor violence and relationship questions.

The Office of the Ombudsman is also available to help students take care of university-related concerns.

Anything from problems with classes, grades and faculty to parking ticket complaints can be addressed at the Office of the Ombudsman, said University Ombudsman Tim Griffin.

Griffin’s advice is to handle problems face-to-face with the students involved.

“Go to the person directly and openly to see if it can be resolved right there,” Griffin said. He accepts walk-ins or appointments in his office.

Another location where students can receive help is the Psychological Services Center, which provides counseling and psychological evaluations for members of the NIU community, said Karen White, director of the Psychological Service Center.

Located in front of the Psychology Building, the center works with students who have anxiety, depression, academic or adjustment problems, sexual difficulties and family issues.
