NIU without starting goalie

Coming off its second win of the season and four days’ rest, the NIU men’s soccer team will play two games this weekend.

At 2 p.m. today, the University of Missouri-Kansas City comes to Huskie Soccer Field with an 0-3 record. NIU will then take to the road for a 2 p.m. Sunday match-up at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

UMKC sophomore Brian Garcia scored the Kangaroo’s only three goals this season with a hat trick in their loss to No. 25 Drake Saturday.

The Huskies (2-3) were led by sophomore Justin McGrane’s two goals in Sunday’s win at Wright State.

“We can’t look at anyone’s record lightly at this point in the season,” NIU coach Steve Simmons said. “We’re staying pretty humble.”

UWGB will remain at home this weekend, taking on Loyola on Friday before Sunday’s showdown with NIU.

The Phoenix (2-2) have five players with at least one goal. Three of the five have found the back of the net twice. The Huskies’ Kevin Woerner and Curt Zastrow, each with one goal, round out NIU’s scoring nucleus.

“They have a new coach and can score,” Simmons said. “We’re playing on the road, so we don’t want to give away anything silly.”

In last year’s meeting, NIU took a 1-0 lead into halftime, only to be overtaken in the second half, with consecutive UWGB goals.

Matt Stukenberg, a student assistant with this year’s squad, scored the final goal with 25 minutes remaining in the second half. The final result was a tie after a scoreless overtime.

“Our attack is going to be our best defense on Sunday,” Simmons said.

The Huskies will be without No. 1 goalkeeper Steve Goletz, who went to the doctor on Thursday for a diagnosis after a collision with an opposing player Sept. 10.

“I have a bad contusion in my right knee that’s continuing to swell,” Goletz said. “If all goes well, I’ll be able to practice in a few days.”

Simmons said that Goletz will be held out of today’s game and junior transfer Brent Hartman will start.
