Faculty fit exercise program
August 31, 2004
NIU faculty and staff have a workout option free from students.
Fitness Images Today offers classes in water aerobics, strength training and low-impact aerobics in a good environment for working out, said Juli Kieronski, director of the FIT Program at NIU.
The Kinesiology and Physical Education Department sponsors FIT and is open to all NIU employees, spouses of employees, NIU retirees and residents of the surrounding communities. FIT has been around since the 1980s.
“We offer a more personalized environment for those who are new to exercise, returning to exercise or who need a little extra guidance or motivation,” Kieronski said.
A seasonal pass is $60 but varies based on options.
The program provides individually designed programs to meet specific fitness goals for members and offers a variety of classes, Kieronski said.
“If you prefer to work out on your own, you can choose to use the equipment in the weight/cardiovascular room or lap swim. If you prefer a group setting, you can choose from a variety of other aerobic classes.”
Members have the options of blood pressure screenings, body composition analysis and flexibility testing, although membership cost varies based on the chosen membership options, Kieronski said.
“FIT promotes a welcoming environment for members of all skill levels, beginner to advanced,” Kieronski said. “Along with the idea that fitness is for life and it’s never too late to start a fitness program, regardless of your activity level in the past.”
Those who join FIT receive attention from the faculty that benefits their exercise routine, Kieronski said.
“Faculty members would benefit from the convenient campus location and personal attention from staff,” she said. “FIT offers a knowledgeable staff along with a wide variety of activities at a reasonable price.”
