Metal, rock and a little Jacko
September 28, 2004
Welcome to another tight edition of Playback, yo! This week’s mighty mix comes from freshman undecided major Jason Hoye. Hoye hails from Chicago and is pumped to go see Slayer in concert at the Aragon Ballroom in November. He also enjoys playing guitar on the side but isn’t in a band. If Hoye were to make a mix CD of his favorite songs today, these tracks would reign supreme:
1. “Raining Blood” – Slayer. “This is perhaps the greatest metal song of all time and a great way to start off a CD mix.”
2. “Let’s Go Crazy” – Prince. “My favorite Prince song – with a killer guitar solo at the end.”
3. “Spaceship” – Kanye West. “This is a great song by a great rapper. If you’ve ever had a bad day at work, you should check out this song.”
4. “Over the Hills and Far Away” – Led Zeppelin. “It’s hard to not include ‘Stairway’ because that’s seen as the best Zepplin song, but this is just a great song by one of the best bands of all time.”
5. “Dyers Eve” – Metallica. “This is a serious rock-out song that will get you pumped. I know it’s Metallica and they are not respected nowadays, but their old stuff is good.”
6. “Patience” – Guns N’ Roses. “A nice little campfire-type song with a catchy chorus, too.”
7. “Floods” – Pantera. “Pantera is my favorite band of all time. The song has a guitar solo that beats out everything except for ‘Stairway’ for ‘Best Solo of All Time.’”
8. “No Woman No Cry” – Bob Marley. “One of the top Bob songs with a nice melody to sing along to.”
9. “Einstein” – Tech N9ne. “An unheard-of rapper that can flow with the best of them. I saw him live in concert, opening for Insane Clown Posse, and I really got into his music.”
10. “Ceremony” – Joe Satriani. “A great song to drive to and great guitar work by Satriani. He’s an awesome guitarist and doesn’t get any respect for it.”
11. “Venus De Milo” – Miles Davis. “Miles is a genius, and this song displays that pretty well.”
12. “Wish You Were Here” – Pink Floyd. “This isn’t typical Floyd, but it is a great song, regardless.”
13. “Man in the Mirror” – Michael Jackson. “No mix CD would be complete without a little MJ. I remember singing this song when I was a little kid to anyone that would listen.”
14. “The Seed 2.0” – The Roots. “The Roots are really doing a great thing with hip-hop. This song will change your respect for other hip-hop artists.”
15. “Free Bird” – Lynyrd Skynyrd. “The best song of all time and also a great way to close out a CD.”
