Panel seeks preventative measures

Members of NIU’s NAACP chapter spent most of their Monday meeting discussing ways to have peaceful events on campus and in the community.

The meeting was touted as a follow-up discussion to last Wednesday’s talk about the events surrounding a Sept. 12 fight at Husky’s Grille and Sports Bar. The original panel involved police, students and business representatives and debated violence in the black community.

The fight involved hundreds of people and resulted in three arrests. Officers from at least three agencies responded to the fight with shotguns and sprayed mace at the crowd.

Monday’s audience suggested as ways to prevent another Husky-like incident.

“It’s not only people from the city,” said Tamika Romayne, NAACP vice president of public affairs, about those who attend the events and may cause trouble. She also said the atmosphere created by the organizers sets the tone for the event.

Chapter President Timothy Jones said the key is to “set the tone before we ever walk into the party.” Some in the crowd also talked about upping the dress code to prevent those who don’t care enough to dress up from attending certain events.

NIU administration reportedly has taken notice of the Husky event.

Willard Draper, adviser for NAACP, said the “administration is very concerned about this issue.”

It’s important that you take care of your own house,” Draper said.
