Men’s soccer on a roll

By Sean Connor

One more win and the NIU men’s soccer team will eclipse four wins in a season for the first time since 2000.

Friday’s 3-0 victory over Missouri-Kansas City at Huskie Soccer Field and Sunday’s 4-1 win over host Wisconsin-Green Bay moved the Huskies to 4-3-0.

This weekend also represented the first time NIU has been over the .500 mark since 1999 when the team lost in the MAC tournament championship game.

“When you play with urgency, it makes a big difference in details,” NIU coach Steve Simmons said. “We weren’t sharp before, and now we’re a touch sharper.”

NIU senior Bruce Conrad scored his first two goals of the season and fifth and sixth of his career this weekend.

Walk-on Tony Lanera assisted on Conrad’s first goal nine minutes into the game against UMKC.

“Bruce is a talented player,” Simmons said. “We’ve really pushed him to get better, and he’s responding.”

Freshman Curt Zastrow’s second goal in a Huskie uniform put NIU up 2-0 at halftime.

UMKC (0-4-0) rounded out the scoring for NIU when goalkeeper Jason Howell initially lost the handle on the ball in an attempt to throw it to a teammate and tossed the ball into his own net.

“Anytime you play a team that’s not having things go their way, you don’t want to give them reasons to gain momentum,” Simmons said. “You need to beat the opponents you’re supposed to and not get caught off guard.”

Sophomore Jose Alvarado kicked off NIU’s scoring campaign against UWGB (3-3-0) with a shot from 25 yards out.

The Phoenix knotted the game at one, but NIU’s Chris VanDuerm scored with just under one minute left in the half for a 2-1 lead.

Conrad’s second goal of the weekend came on a header, and senior Bernhard Hagevik put on the finishing touch, scoring his first goal of the season for the win.

“We did a great job of punishing UWGB,” Simmons said. “We’re taking advantage of the moments that we could be down. It was a good team performance.”
