Men’s soccer team falls short against Oregon State
August 29, 2004
When the time came to make an attack at Oregon State’s net, the NIU men’s soccer team picked up the tempo.
However, sophomore Mike Corvo’s centering pass with six seconds remaining in the game was deflected and Kevin Woerner’s rebound attempt was blocked in a 1-0 exhibition loss Saturday at Huskie Soccer Field.
“Our guys know it’s my old team,” said Simmons, who served as associate coach at OSU the past two years. “They came out and played hard at a higher level against a team from the PAC-10.”
OSU scored its only goal 25 minutes into the game when Alex Asal punched in a pass from Loren Hill into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
On paper, the Huskies would have come across as being the aggressor, putting five shots on goal to the Beavers’ two. NIU also had 11 overall shots compared to OSU’s six, but couldn’t score on goalkeeper Jason Marlner, who logged zero minutes in the net for the Beavers last season.
With the loss to OSU, the Huskies finished their exhibition season 1-1-1 with a tie against Wisconsin-Parkside and a win against the Huskies alumni.
NIU opens its regular season Wednesday at Western Illinois.
As for the Huskies goalkeeper situation, Simmons said he still wants to look at the game tape before he makes a decision about whether or not to continue to start Matt Corcoran or go with junior transfer Brent Hartman or sophomore Steve Goletz.
Goletz who received a medical redshirt for missing all of last season with a broken wrist.
“It was a tale of three periods,” Simmons said. “It’s going to be a tough decision, but it’s a real good thing to have that type of depth at that position.”
