Christian pop concert tour coming to Convo Center

Adoration: The Tour,” a Christian pop concert featuring Newsboys, Rebecca St. James and Todd Agnew, will perform Nov. 11 in the Convocation Center.

Both Newsboys and St. James released worship albums this year. The Newsboys will release another new album, Nov. 2.

Newsboys’ released their first album in 1988, and St. James’ first release was in 1991.

The Newsboys have definitely made a name for themselves, said Kevin Selover, marketing manager for the Convocation Center.

“There’s not many Christian groups bigger to bring to DeKalb than Newsboys and St. James,” Selover said. “They hit more of a college-type market. We pride ourselves in bringing diverse acts.”

Frank Brendlinger, currently enrolled at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, said he believes Christian music is trying harder to reach a younger audience.

“When I was younger, they were in small venues, but now they are in secular venues and are more advertised,” Brendligner said.

“A lot of Christian bands are secular,” he said. “People listen to it and don’t even realize they’re listening to Christian music.”

The Rev. Michael Black of the Newman Catholic Student Center said he feels differently.

“When you have a song of Christian content, you can remember the message,” Black said. “I think movies and songs can do that. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s promoting gospel values.”

The last time this tour hit the area was March 26 in Chicago.

Tickets for the 7 p.m. concert can be purchased at the Convocation Center box office. Tickets also can be obtained by calling TicketMaster at 312-559-1212 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

About 6,000 seats will be available, Selover said. Tickets are $21.50.
