Candidate for Student Affairs VP visits campus
June 14, 2004
The search for a new vice president of Student Affairs continued Monday as a search committee brought in one of two candidates for two days of interviews and meetings.
Brian Hemphill, currently the associate vice chancellor for Student Affairs and dean of students at the University of Arkansas, spent the day touring NIU and meeting with staff members.
Hemphill spoke with faculty, staff and students in an open session at the Holmes Student Center, making a brief statement and answering questions.
Hemphill described his philosophy as “very student-centered.”
“I think this experience should be seamless,” he said. “If we are not focusing on student learning, I think we are missing the mark.”
Later in the session, Hemphill was asked why he has chosen NIU in furthering his career; he responded by saying: “When you read about a student from this institution talking about the president and saying, ‘I love that guy,’ it’s rare.”
He continued and elaborated on the potential NIU has because of its location near Chicago as well as its diverse student populous.
Charlyne Spears, head of the search committee working to fill the position, said the new vice president will have to match well with NIU.
“We are only half the chooser,” she said. “It all depends on putting what we are looking for in the next few years and what the candidate is looking to do and making a match.”
Hemphill said his objective over the next few years is to see the university grow.
“If you were to tell me that we are in good shape as a division, that we don’t have much room to improve, then I am not your man,” he said. “Take me off of your list, because I am always trying to develop and improve upon what has already been established.”
The position of vice president of Student Affairs is a variation from the previous position held by Gary Gresholdt, who was the vice provost.
The change in title includes a spot on the president’s cabinet, whereas the previous position reported to Vice President and Provost Ivan Legg.
The second candidate for the position, Thomas Rios, will visit NIU June 22 and 23.
