Arena sells more than 7,000 tickets for Chappelle show
April 1, 2004
Guess who sold out, bitches?
For only the second time in the arena’s 20-month history, the Convocation Center has sold out a show. The April 15 Dave Chappelle comedy show officially sold out late last week.
More than 7,000 tickets were sold for the show, said Kevin Selover, marketing director for the Convocation Center. Originally it was announced that just 5,300 tickets would be sold, but as the demand increased, so did the tickets.
“I thought it would do well, but I had no idea it would do this well,” Selover said. “It definitely exceeded our expectations.”
Signs the show would sell out came early.
On the first day tickets went on sale, more than 500 people were in line before doors opened. More than 4,000 tickets were sold that day, Selover said.
“It’s great to be such a demand,” Selover said. “I think we found an act students really enjoy.”
The Chappelle’s NIU appearance is the first of 25 scheduled dates across the county, according to Ticketmaster, which no longer is selling tickets for the DeKalb date.
Tickets still are available on the Internet auction site eBay. As of Wednesday afternoon, two tickets in section 108 were going for $160.
NIU students were able to purchase tickets for $24 each.
Having the show sell out nearly three weeks before the date is a good sign for the arena, Selover said. Being able to sell out so early makes the arena more appealing to booking agents, Selover said, which could mean more acts in the future.
The increase in tickets requires an increase in event staff and security for the show.
The last show to sell out for the arena was Brooks and Dunn in February, which sold a little more than 6,000 tickets.
