NIU to host education job fair
April 2, 2004
NIU will host its 19th annual Mid-America Educators’ Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Convocation Center.
Nearly 150 school districts from across the nation will look for prospective employees.
While the majority of the districts attending the job fair are from Illinois, employers from states ranging from Texas to California also will attend the fair, said Barbara Kaufmann, a graduate placement officer with the Career Planning and Placement Center.
Representatives from local districts in the Chicago, Elgin, DeKalb and Sycamore areas also will attend.
Junior education major Sylinda Gordon said she hopes to land a job in Chicago.
“They need good teachers. I feel like I can reach them,” Gordon said.
Students who are not yet looking for a job can benefit from the fair by learning what employers are looking for and by polishing their interview skills.
Although most employers are looking to fill teaching positions, there also are vacancies for administrative and service personnel such as social workers, Kaufmann said.
Students who plan to attend the fair should come adequately prepared.
“Come with comfortable shoes, bring lots of resumes and wear a big smile,” Kaufmann said.
