Losing skid hits 11 at DePaul
April 14, 2004
Two more losses were tacked on to the NIU softball team’s record Wednesday at DePaul when the Huskies lost both games of a doubleheader 10-0 and 4-1.
The Blue Demons (16-19-1 overall) won Game 1 in 4 1/2 innings because of NCAA rules that state if a team is up by eight or more runs by the fifth inning, the game is called. Junior pitcher Kathy Dearborn took the loss after giving up all 10 runs, while dropping to 3-13 on the year.
“She got behind the hitters too much,” NIU coach Donna Martin said. “We also didn’t play particularly good defense behind her today.”
The game marked the fifth time in the Huskies’ current 11-game losing streak that the team has been held to three hits or less.
Senior Amy Krahula took the loss for NIU (10-29) in Game 2. NIU scored the first run of the game when Amy Ligmanowski drove in Kelly Park in the second inning.
Sophomore Paige Granath pitched two innings of scoreless relief and allowed one hit for NIU.
“She comes in behind Krahula and Dearborn and pitches at different speeds with different pitches,” Martin said. “It’s what makes her effective and makes the other team adjust.”
