NIU losing streak continues

Three more games resulted in three more losses for the NIU softball team this weekend at Central Michigan.

The Huskies lost by scores of 1-0 and 5-4 in Saturday’s doubleheader before being dropped 12-1 Sunday to extend their losing streak to 14 games.

Down 5-2 in the second game Saturday, the Huskies (10-32 overall, 2-10 MAC) loaded the bases with one out in the seventh. Two runners crossed home plate before a groundout by freshman Lacey Gones and a strikeout from junior Amy Ligmanowski ended the comeback attempt.

“Even when we aren’t hitting the ball very well, we are still getting people in position to score,” Martin said. “We just aren’t doing a very good job of pushing those runs across.”

The Huskies were held to one hit during a 2-0 loss in the first game Saturday and three hits Sunday. NIU has been held to three hits or less seven times during their losing streak.

All three of NIU’s pitchers, Kathy Dearborn, Amy Krahula and Paige Granath, gave up runs Sunday. The trio allowed 11 hits and two home runs before the game was called in the bottom of the fifth because CMU (21-11,10-1) was up by more than eight runs.
