Mathey dresses for the occasion on the diamond

Editor’s note: “The burning question” will examine issues in baseball and softball that have stood the test of time, but confusion still exists about a sure answer. The series will be run in place of road-game previews.
Why do baseball managers wear uniforms?
Ed Mathey, head baseball coach: I think it’s because we look better in uniforms than other coaches do. It’s an interesting question. I’d like to see Rob Judson out there in a basketball uniform or Joe Novak out there in a football helmet for sure.
Nick Hall, sophomore pitcher: I think managers wear uniforms because they’re actually on the playing field and being watched by viewers. In other sports, coaches are on the bench or on the sideline. Baseball coaches are more hands-on and calling signs on the field.
Joe Piekarz, senior pitcher: Baseball coaches have to go out and visit pitchers and stuff like that. It probably helps to identify who it is.
Anthony Venetucci, sophomore catcher: [Laughs] Honestly, I have no idea. That’s a pretty good question. I’d like to know the answer to that one, too. I don’t have a clue.
Jeremy Busch, junior centerfielder: Wow. Do I have time to think about it? I guess, in Coach Mathey’s case, most of the time he throws batting practice to us before the game. In other sports like basketball, you don’t see coaches shooting hoops out there before the game.
The authority
Rob Marconi, senior third baseman: That’s a question we’ve all thought about before. In the past, there have been player/coaches, so that’s probably the main reason why, and it just stuck. I think it makes the coach more a part of the team. That’s why.
