NCAA bracket competition to raise funds for charities
March 3, 2004
Order of Omega is sponsoring a charity event designed for college basketball fans.
Beginning March 15, those interested will be able to purchase a “March to Charity” bracket and select the teams they expect to win in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Each bracket costs $3. If a participant buys five brackets for $15, he or she will receive one free.
Michael Calvert, president of Order of Omega, said he hopes to raise at least $300 to $500 through the charity event.
At the end of the tournament, half of the proceeds will be donated to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, and the other half will go to a charity selected by the winner.
When bracket sheets are turned in, they will be given to www.espn.com.
Winners are determined by the amount of points they receive. Participants can check their points at ESPN’s Web site.
Calvert said the organization decided to hold the event because of the number of college basketball fans on campus.
“It’s a way to entice people to donate to charity,” he said. “It’ll test their knowledge of sports, and it will be fun.”
The Order of Omega chapter at NIU is an organization whose goal is to bring together the university’s fraternities and sororities.
