NIU baseball goes 6-4 over Spring Break

The NIU baseball team finished Spring Break with a 4-1 win over Fairfield. The game was the Huskies’ 10th in 11 days during the break.
The Huskies went 6-4 during those 11 days to improve their record to 9-7 overall.
Senior left-handed pitcher Zach Minor remained perfect on the season at 3-0 for the Huskies. On Thursday, Minor struck out a season-high nine batters in a 10-1 win over Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.
A game later, the Huskies broke a few school records in a 16-6 win over St. Bonaventure. Senior Rob Marconi hit a pair of home runs to move him into a tie with Eric Welsch (25) for the most in a career by a Huskie.
Sophomore Scott Simon also drove in 7 RBI, the second-most ever by a Huskie. The record is eight by Joe Milroy in 1999.
Softball team falls
The NIU softball team fell further below the .500 mark after going 2-8 during break.
The Huskies (7-14 overall) beat Villanova 3-0 on March 7 and Temple 1-0 March 9.
Senior Amy Krahula and junior Kathy Dearborn picked up the only two wins during the stretch for the Huskies.
Forsberg gets award
Aaron Forsberg capped off a successful week for the NIU men’s tennis team by being name MAC Player of the Week on Saturday.
Forsberg went 2-1 during the week, including a pair of straight-set wins.
As for a team, NIU (8-3 overall) went 3-1 and has won seven of its last eight meets.
Women’s tennis goes 1-0
The NIU women’s tennis team won its only match over the break, a 6-3 decision over UC-San Diego on Wednesday. Cassie Drake, Branka Savic, Karrie Tyioran and Daniela Martinez all won singles matches for the Huskies (4-4 overall).
Heslop leads Huskies
Jackie Heslop shot a two-round 154 to lead the NIU women’s golf team to an eighth-place finish at the 18-team Snowbird Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Heslop’s score placed her eight overall at the tournament.
The Huskies also had a 13th-place finish out of 14 teams at the Peggy Kirk Bell Classic on March 8 and 9.
Men’s golf gets 10th
Nicholas Schenk, Ethan Roush and Joe True all shot a 230 to lead NIU to a 10th-place finish at the 10-team Birkdale Intercollegiate on March 13 and 14.
