Young performers bring music, art to NIU on Sat.
March 4, 2004
The Music Building’s Recital Hall will be filled with music and art from young performers Saturday at NIU’s Community School of the Arts Sixth Biannual Performathon.
As part of the Performathon, 81 young music students will perform all day.
Since 1993, more than $50,000 has been raised and more than 250 scholarships have been awarded to students by the NIU Community School of the Arts.
The Performathon raises funds for these scholarship programs.
There are two different types of scholarships offered, for need and for talent.
Deborah Booth, director of the Community School of the Arts, said they expect around 300 people to attend the event.
The first musical performance is scheduled at 9:20 a.m. and the event will wrap up around 3 p.m., Booth said.
Students collect pledges from family and friends, while local businesses support the Performathon through advertising in the event program booklet and by donating prizes for a raffle.
Other events at the Performathon include a music “swap” of donated music books and records for resale, a bake sale, a raffle and a gallery showcasing the work of young art students.
Booth said they hope to raise anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 at the event.
