Tantric: After We Go

By Sam Cholke

Did you like Creed? If you did, you’re going to love Tantric.

Tantric’s second album “After We Go” follows the conventions of its predecessors. It is hard-hitting metal with heart.

-“After We Go” carefully follows in the footsteps of bands like Creed, creating an album that booms its message of heartache and regret through sharp snare hits and effect-laden guitars. Seriously, who puts out an album of 12 songs about lost love? Is this screaming for the “one-trick pony” label?

An example, “Falling Away” opens with a guitar line that is, at best, one note off from Blue Oyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper.” It’s a good song, but when you sing, “How did we let our lives get over-jaded/ We’re not the ones who asked to stay belated,” it fails to live up to the original.

The lyrics on “After We Go” are awkward at best, and there are points that sound like the lyrics were pieced together from a rhyming dictionary rather than the singer’s experiences.

At least the album is interestingly produced. Watching the videos included with the CD, someone can understand why the album sounds so good. “As We Go” was recorded in Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, one of the top studios in the country, and also one of the priciest. With some of the country’s best recording engineers working on an album, someone should hope it sounds interesting.

Tantric’s songs are little more than a cliche that lasts 48:28 and costs more than $16. If you are a fan of “heart-metal,” save your money because you’ve probably heard this all before.
