Art exhibit planned in honor of Women’s History Month
March 4, 2004
The DeKalb Area Women’s Center will hold an art exhibit commemorating Women’s History Month.
The exhibit will kick off with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m today at the center, 1021 State St. The gallery will feature artwork from NIU professors and graduate students.
The gallery will be open from 7 to 9 p.m. until the end of the month. People can make an appointment to see the gallery by calling 758-1351.
Joseph LoPresti, curator of the event, put the show together. This is the first time he participated in the Women’s History Month art gallery.
LoPresti said visitors should look for an untitled piece made by Ashley Newcome. The piece features a dress made of fiber.
He also mentioned “Pillowed,” by Suzanne Gorgas, which is a bed made from different parts of other beds.
Gallery Director Anna Marie Coveny said the main reason for the exhibit is to feature women artists.
“It’s important to see the variety of artwork that will be presented,” Coveny said.
Today’s reception is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.
The center also will hold the Herstorical Tea Program on March 28 to continue celebrating Women’s History Month.
Back when women weren’t allowed to vote, they also weren’t allowed to assemble together, Coveny said.
Instead, women held tea parties and strategized how to fight for their rights, she said.
At the tea party, the value of image coins will be raised. People can get in for $1 with a Sacagawea golden dollar or a Susan B. Anthony silver dollar. Admission is $3 without the coins.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn about women’s contributions to society,” Coveny said.
