Gymnastics team to play for MAC championship

After taking her second consecutive state all-around championship, Kristina Campos and the NIU gymnastics team will compete for the MAC championship at 7 p.m. today.

NIU (7-9 overall, 2-4 MAC) is one of seven teams including favorites Central Michigan (15-3, 6-0) and No. 26 Kent State (11-2, 5-1). Also competing are Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Ball State.

After matching her season high last Saturday at the State of Illinois Classic, Campos now is looking to become the third NIU gymnast to qualify for the NCAA regionals three times. The defending MAC Gymnast of the Year, Campos is in the running for the MAC all-around title.

Today also marks the last time senior Dannielle Dacey will compete in an NIU uniform. Dacey has the second-highest all-around average this season for the Huskies with 38.950.

Host CMU looks to finish off its season undefeated and repeat as MAC champions. If it wins, it would be its 10th title in school history.

CMU junior Kara Reighard will look to three-peat. Reighard is trying to become the first gymnast to win the MAC all-around title three consecutive years. She also will be defending her titles in the floor and vault.

During the past 16 seasons in the MAC championships, CMU and Kent State have combined to win 15.
