Summer employment fair provides venue to find jobs

By Jamie Luchsinger

NIU students will have a chance to meet with a variety of employers at the summer employment fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom, Career Counselor Karen Castelein said.

Employers include Menards, the Genoa Park District, the Air National Guard, U.S. Army Recruiting and Pool Watch Inc. A complete list of employers and their profiles is available at www.niu.edu/cppc.

The summer employment fair gives students the opportunity to meet with potential employers, Castelein said. It teaches students how to present themselves in a professional manner, she said.

The fair is a more informal, less-pressured environment, Castelein said. She said it helps decrease nervousness and stress a student may feel when looking for a summer job.

Although NIU representatives try to follow up with employers to see if they’ve hired NIU students, Castelein said there aren’t any statistics showing how many NIU students have received jobs after they have attended the employment fair.

“Two years ago, six students were hired on the spot for summer camp jobs,” Castelein said.

However, she said every year is different. Two years ago, the economy was different and many students already had jobs lined up, she said, so attendance at the fair was scarce compared to past years.

Helpful tips to prepare for the job fair are available at www.niu.edu/cppc. Students also can access sample resumes and resume templates at the Web site.
