Monday marks priority deadline to file FAFSA forms
February 27, 2004
Monday is the priority application date for applying for financial aid for the 2004-’05 academic year.
Applications still will be accepted after Monday, but in order to get the best financial aid package available, students should have their applications in by Monday. Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
Kathleen Brunson, director of student financial aid, said more than 16,000 students receive financial aid each year. She said many of these students apply for aid after the priority date but still receive aid.
Brunson said any student can apply. Students have to fill out a FAFSA application and an NIU verification form for the following school year.
The student’s current-year income tax returns and W-2 forms, along with their parents’ forms, must be attached to the application.
After it is completed, it can be sent to the Student Financial Aid Office at Swen Parson Hall, Room 245.
The application process also can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This is the preferred method because it can be done much faster. If mistakes are made, students can go back and correct them.
The government must receive applications no later than June 30, 2005, and the university must have the student’s correct information by the last day of enrollment in the 2004-’05 school year.
Tips for filing for financial aid
l Read the form carefully. Questions can be tricky and if answered incorrectly, it can delay the process.
l Read all instructions, write legibly and make sure to sign wherever signatures are required.
l Apply early. To ensure aid from as many sources as possible, apply as soon as possible after Jan. 1.
l Complete your tax return. Filling out your taxes will make the process easier. You can submit your FAFSA before you have filled out your tax return. You will have to correct any information that has changed on your FAFSA once you file your taxes.
